Artist's Statement
These paintings are close to the source; they are immediate and direct. Ideas become paint very quickly, and I am able to stay in motion and hop from one interest to the next, ping-ponging between various concepts, approaches, subjects and visual languages. The unifying thread is an exploration of the relationship between simplification/reduction of form and the resulting ambiguity of an emotional experience, as well as the conflation of language, symbol, nonsense, logic, intuition, and codification of meaning. My interests also lie in the idea of prescribed limitation as a catalyst for creative play, and to this end each painting is a new puzzle with a new solution. The aim is to make paintings that are distinct and mysterious; fundamentally elegant; absurd, magical, sincere and resonant.
